The North Carolina Federation of College Republicans is holding their 2007 Fall Convention on October 5-6 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The convention will be held at the Velvet Cloak Inn on Hillsborough Street in downtown Raleigh and will feature prominent conservative speakers who are dedicated to leading today’s youth in the conservative movement. The convention has scheduled a Friday evening dinner, which is open to the public for a fee and will include two speakers, three Saturday morning training seminars, and a Saturday afternoon luncheon which will feature the remainder of the speakers. A business session will follow the luncheon and there will be an executive board meeting following the convention.
Confirmed Speakers Include:
Charlie Smith – Mr. Smith is at the forefront of promoting conservative values as he began a College Republican Chapter in his second week on campus at Daniels College of Business. He was elected chairman and built membership to over 200 students and hosted prominent conservative speakers. He achieved leadership positions in the state chapter, first as State Treasurer and has now served two terns as State Chairman. Mr. Smith has been awareded the State Chairman of the Year for his impressive work at Daniels College of Business and within the Colorado Federation of College Republicans. He now serves as the National Chairman of College Republicans.
Jack Hawke – Mr. Hawke is a former Chairman of the N.C. Republican Party and has served as a Special Assistant to Governor Martin for Policy, Director of the State Division of Policy and Planning, Deputy Secretary of the N.C. Department of Transportation, and Federal Chairman of the Coastal Plains Regional Commission. He has successfully managed political campaigns including current Congresswoman Virginia Foxx’s 2004 congressional campaign. Mr. Hawke is currently President of the Civitas Institute.
Honorable Bob Orr – Mr. Orr has spent his career in the judicial system serving 8 years on the North Carolina Court of Appeals and 10 years on the North Carolina Supreme Court. Mr. Orr has served as Executive Director and Senior Counsel for the North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law (NCICL). He has spent his 30-year career as a practicing attorney as an advocate for the legal profession; serving on various committees and commissions within the North Carolina Bar Association. Mr. Orr is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has served three years in the United States Army. He is currently running for Governor of North Carolina.
Joe McLaughlin – Mr. McLaughlin received a Presidential Appointment to the United States Air Force Academy from President Nixon. He is a graduate from the Academy and then received a commission in the United States Army. As an Army Ranger, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He also earned a Masters of Science from the Naval Postgraduate School and was a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College. His military service has earned him the Meritorious Service Medal and the Master Parachutist Badge. Mr. McLaughlin is currently serving his second term on the Onslow County Board of Commissioners and is seeking the Republican nomination for North Carolina’s District 3 Congressional seat.
Honorable J. Douglas McCullough – Judge McCullough has spent twenty-eight years in the Marine Corps and retired in 1998 as a Colonel. He is a member of the Bar of U.S. Supreme Court, North Carolina State Bar, and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina. He has spent time as Counsel to the Senate Ethics Committee and the Legislative Counsel and Staff Director of Senator Harrison Schmitt (R-NM.) He has spent time as an Acting U.S. Attorney and Senior Litigation Counsel. Judge McCullough is currently serving as an Associate Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
John Edwards – Mr. Edwards began his career as a journalist, working for WRAL-TV and WWAY-TV. He worked mostly as a Photojournalist and has produced segments that have appeared on The Montel Williams Show and the History Channel. Politically he has served as the Chairman of the Elon College Republicans and published the statewide newsletter, “The Republican Reporter.” Mr. Edwards is currently Vice President of Search Productions, a video production and media duplication facility has produced advertisements for Republican candidates for the General Assembly, U.S. House and Senate.
